I wrote back in July bemoaning the music scene in Finland in 2016. I found few gigs of any worth to go to and although there have been some great individual gigs, there really hasn’t been too much to write about – thus the relative inactivity of the blog this year. Are things about to take a turn for the better in 2017?
The high and lows of South Park Festival, 2015. A straight comparison with last year is probably not fair. Def Leppard to me on another level to Europe.
However the whole event, or at least the day we we attended can be compared.
Here are some more photo’s and highlights from the South Park Festival in Tampere from June 6, 2015.
The set up was quite different from last year. In 2015 there were good bands on the main stage thought the day. Today, with the exception of Helloween, they were all tosh. That’s being polite.
This was a greatest hits package. But who the fuck cares.
Never mind the fact that the wonderful sounds of Pyromania are from 1983 and before, Hysteria is 28 years old this year. With such familiarity is there anyway that this is going to be the greatest gig ever?
Helloween have never been one of my favourite bands. In fact if it wasn’t for a friend buying me a greatest hits album a few years back I would have had little or no exposure to them at all.
I think of them as a poor man’s Iron Maiden, with a touch of Queensrÿche thrown in for good measure. Continue reading Don’t Run for Cover – Helloween Thrash South Park, Tampere
South Park Festival time and I envisaged Reckless Love to be opening the main stage performances today. That wasn’t to be.
4th on the second stage, and still outranking their rival Finnish band Santa Cruz for now, they played their usual brand of good time rock ‘n’ roll ala Poison or a clean Mötley Crüe.
So how have they progressed?
I saw Santa Cruz the previous night and said they played literally just stepping off a plane. Today they were the first “big” band on the second stage at Tampere South Park festival and they sounded tired.
5 days of fun starts today with 3 gigs in 3 different locations with the possibility of seeing at least 7 different bands – with potential for about 5 more if things go to plan.
The weekend starts tonight in one of my favourite smallish venues, Nosturi, with Santa Cruz providing the entertainment.
In just over 5 weeks the trek to Tampere begins again. This years headliners on the Saturday are Def Leppard. I cannot wait to see them again. I saw them “in the ring” I’m guessing almost 30 years ago.
Like last years main act, Europe, these guys have a huge appeal to me and I really can’t wait.
In May last year I was enthusing about going to Tampere to see the South Park Festival with Europe headlining. It’s only March and I confirm that festival tickets have been bought and hotel rooms booked already.
I’m super excited. This year’s Saturday headliners are Def Leppard!!
