I bookmarked this article quite some time ago, thinking that it would be good to reference and also interesting to see how many of the foods on the list I actually eat regularly.
Diet is obviously one thing that I have concentrated on over the past couple of years. Fruit and especially vegetables are 2 of the 10 things I’ve had more of Since My Diet Began.
Today I revisit the post and see if the article stands up or whether any of these foods have been written off as fads or untruths. Disclaimer: the original article was posted on BrightSide.
Foods You Can Eat a Lot of and Still Not Gain Weight
Unsurprisingly the list consists mostly of fruits and vegetables. I’ll come on to them but the perhaps surprising inclusions were popcorn and algae.
Given the backlash against microwave popcorn it’s no shock that they specify natural popcorn (though frying?):
If you fry popcorn without butter and sugar (with a little salt, for instance), you can eat it without fear.
I wouldn’t even know where to get algae if I want to eat it but it helps thyroid and also can help keeping your hormones at normal levels.
Conscience Free Vegetables
Aren’t all vegetables conscience free? Well, it would appear that not all vegetables are created equally. The article suggest that the water based veg are good. I tend to find that they don’t fill me up though.
There are some root vegetables included, and I must admit that knowing the benefits of beetroot, for example, I do try to try to eat my fair share of root veggies.
There are a few other vegetables listed that are high in nutrients.
Conscience Free Fruit
This category is a bit more interesting. I can understand the sugar aspect of this. The site cites citrus fruits as being good to eat a lot of, as they contain fibre and vitamin C. The benefits include satiation and aiding digestion.
Apples and plums are also included on the list. I’m not so keen on apples any more. Perhaps too many varieties?
One fruit that I do love, and only recently discovered, is persimmon. Also a good source of vitamin C, I’m not sure how close to this list they ever come, they are very sweet so may be quite high natural sugar content. Delicious though.
Conscience Free Berries
I love berries, and was glad to see these listed here. I particularly like blueberries, but any types of berries are a staple part of my breakfast. Freshly frozen with granola and yogurt.
Conscience Free Foods
Also include are salads and eggs. Salads can be bland I guess, especially in Finland where tomato & cucumber seem to constitute the main part of it – although there are myths suggesting that this is not a very healthy combination.
15 Foods You Can Eat Without A Conscience
- Oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines
- Melon & watermelon
- Apples & plums
- Berries: currant, cranberry, strawberry
- Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower
What do you think of the list? Do you agree with it (other than it is incorrectly titled & contains over 20 foods)?
