After skipping Delain’s first visit to Finland I finally got to see one of my “Bucket list” bands and I’ve got to say – they were magnificent.
For various reasons I missed Delain’s debut at Tuska earlier this year but I really wanted to see them live and this was second only to Nightwish in terms of living up to expectations.
We got quite close to the front for this one, it wasn’t too hard because they were on so early – but the place fairly filled up and they were playing to quite a substantial crowd by the time they were finished.
I’ve liked this band for a number of years now, introduced to them with their song, April Rain – this is still one of my favorite tracks of all time. I even have it as a ringtone. They didn’t play it though, which was mildly disappointing. But only mildly.
They were missing their new guitarist, Merel Bechtold, but this did not stop them from performing a energetic set.
Charlotte Wessels is their lead. She is stunning. I had a dream of meeting her at the concert and saying what an honor it was to meet my #2 woman in rock. After seeing her, perform live, I think I would have to say she is now my #1.
Very energetic and captivating the audience with her every movement she knows how to work the crowd. She has a very good voice too that holds up very well on stage.
Watched from backstage by most, if not all, of Nightwish, they performed 9 songs from 4 albums. A very good mix of old and new. The new songs fitted in very well and although they said in their intros about new stuff most people joined in as if they had known the tracks for years.
The highlights for me were the opening track, “Suckerpunch”, the very poignant “We are the Others” and the classic “The Gathering” that drove the crowd wild. Their full set is available at setlist.fm.
The expectations were high on this song since the vocals are shared with Marco Hietala from Nightwish. The crowd was not disappointed as he joined in on stage. This is probably one of the best songs I’ve seen in a live performance.
As expected, the rest of the day paled into insignificance other than the headliners themselves. I cannot wait for their new album to drop … or to see them again live. I’d even travel to see them if they are headlining: they certainly have enough good material for a full set.
Summed up in 3 words: Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte!!!
Great stuff. Were you there? What did you think?
You can see a selection of concert photos in my Flickr album – Delain.
