Time to Call it a Day Dave

With the anticipation of a new album from Van Halen (albeit a live one) I was keen to get a reminder of the VH greatness live as they performed on Jimmy Kimmel.

What came to pass was a reminder of all the things that I don’t like about Van Halen and why won’t be forking out nearly 100€ plus travel to see them if/when they hit the shores of Europe soon.

I could appreciate that their singer, David Lee Roth, had a cold, a sleeping disorder or broken nose due to the strategic placement of tape but I don’t think that is a good enough excuse for what ensued.

Eddie & Alex sounded great. There, I needed to have something positive in what is a very negative blog post. So drums and guitar covered in five words. The bass?

Wolfgang is Eddie’s son, allegedly. He replaced long time bassist Michael Anthony quite a few years back. Listening to Michael’s latest band/project Chickenfoot you can hear where the  harmonies come from.

Sifting though the comments you can see what the fans feel about Wolfie though. It’s not his fault he looks like he’s eaten the guy he replaced in the band.

Most of the comments and words of derision where aimed at Diamond Dave. He was the reason that I stopped watching the video after less than 2 minutes of Unchained.

I’ve seen clips of DLR singing with all other instruments and vocals turned down. These were from over 30 years ago before the Stella-ness of 1984 and the classics that came before.

He sounded awful. He basically cannot sing – and was obviously covered by good mixing and stronger vocals from other band members when performing live.

So I have always had my doubts. I may add at this point that I prefer The Van Hagar era when the Red Rocker was the main man.

Not that I don’t think that he was an excellent performer / showman,  DLR’s voice has ever been up to much IMHO and this latest performance just backs things up for me. And I don’t begrudge his life or his lifestyle.

But this lifestyle has obviously taken its toll. Give up Dave. I won’t be rushing out to buy the new live album or seeing the on tour. I will check the album if it comes to spotify and really hope that it sounds better than the Jimmy Kimmel performance.

I’ve not even bothered with the Ellen Show clip yet or other JK segments for that matter… You can see all their stuff online from Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel here.

Here’s the video. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below. Am I being too harsh?
