I Could “Do This Every Night” – Danko Jones Road Trip

In post #2 of this two part series here are some snaps and the highlights of the Talvi Festivaali that took place in Kuopio and Joensuu in February 2017.

Almost 2 years ago to the day Danko Jones were promoting their latest album, Fire Music, on a boat cruising between Finland and Estonia. This time around another new album, Wild Cat and a new mini-festival with even more suitable stable mates – Backyard Babies and Hardcore Superstar.

Add Pariisin Kevät, Disco Ensemble and Olavi Uusivirta to keep the locals happy and you have a great line up for what promised to be to great nights of rock n roll.

The Line Up

Pariisin Kevät
Backyard Babies (SWE)
Disco Ensemble
Hardcore Superstar (SWE)
Olavi Uusivirta
Danko Jones (CAN)

The line up was the same both days with the exception of Backyard Babies and Hardcore Superstar swapping places between nights.

Pariisin Kevät

On both nights we missed the opening act: Pariisin Kevät. Sorry for that. Did anyone see them, where they any good?

Set lists: Kupio | Joensuu

Backyard Babies

Backyard Babies were brilliant. Pure R&R. They have been on the go for a really long time. I knew quite a few of their songs before hand – often a case of “Oh, I didn’t know they did that song”.

I felt they were better on the second night. Partially due to the atmosphere, partially due to the fact I was even more familiar with their music and what to expect.

Disco Ensemble

I’ve been fortunate enough to see this band once before at Himos Park a couple of years ago. I liked them then and liked them now. They are a super energetic band that remind me of something from the 80s.

Their singer has a real nervous energy and I the crowd both nights appreciated some great songs from their past and present albums.

Hardcore Superstar

Hardcore Superstar were the find of the events. I had heard some of their music before, but their show and attitude was great. They had a very tight sound and good set.

They got half of the audience up on stage for a drink at one point and they finished their sets both times with their roadie dismantling the drum kit during their final song.

Olavi Uusivirta

My wife had heard of this guy. I listened to one song on Spotify before the gig and thought: “Oh God, no!”.

However he was again very energetic and the locals seemed to love him. Not really my kind of music and his shirt was awful, but he soon had that off and was charging around the stage like a mad man.

Danko Jones

The stars of the show. 2 great performances again. These guys are a tremendous live act. They don’t mess around and hammer through there songs full of energy.

I must admit to being quite drunk on the first night. I remember jumping around lots and was very hoarse the next day. We got right up to the front on day 1. On day 2 not so close, but we were able to observe and enjoy the show from a different perspective.

2 nights of great entertainment. Will be looking out for Backyard Babies and Hardcore Superstar when they come back to Finland.

As for Danko? They are touring Europe again on the back of their Wild Cat album released last week. Might be another road trip in the offing 🙂
