As an early, and surprise, birthday party our daughter was taken to be part of Katy Perry’s first concert in Finland. Not expecting much, other than a very excited young girl, I was pleasantly delighted by the show.
Charlie xcx was the opening act. I have never heard of her before. I was proud of myself for guessing where she was from though just by her looks. With her band dressed as Angels she rattled through a 30 minute medley of mostly up tempo songs. Some of which I actually recognised.
It was obvious from the size and shape of the stage that it was going to be quite a spectacular show.
I don’t think anyone could have left disappointed after almost 2 hours so catchy tunes, many dancers and a very impressive screen display and excellent light show and the expected “fireworks” at the end.
As Katy rose from beneath the stage the show started with “roar”. Many dancers in fluorescent garb with no actual musicians in sight.
There was definitely no lip syncing at this point. I was slightly concerned about the quality of her voice but it definitely improved after a few songs. Why oh why don’t singers warm up before the show?
The performance was fairly non-stop and broken down into acts with different musical styles. There was Egyptian, hippy, dance and a very memorable Kitty Purry segment where they mimicked “Cats” stage show and performed in a swing style. Full set list here.
Crowd interaction was very good. Katy tried to speak a bit of Finnish and donned a Finnish flag at some point. She also took a mega selfie with one member of the audience and had another sitting on the top of a huge cake during “Happy birthday”.
The arena was lit up during the slow songs and the gig ended with Fireworks – an apt way to end the show.
Overall, very enjoyable night. Not on the same level as p!nk as a performer but a really good show. Very entertaining considering I don’t many songs and like even less.
What do you think? Were you there or were you roaring with Battle Beast?
