Within Temptation kicked off their Hydra tour in Helsinki in February. Perhaps due to the duet with Tarja, “Paradise (What about us?)”, I was envisaging the duet live on stage to end the show. Disappointing that it was the first real song after the start.
The song itself is great, but it was just Sharon singing with a backing “movie” of the video (band of course playing too). It didn’t work. The video was a bit out of sync and, well, it would have been a lot better with Tarja in person. Say no more.
After that there was a bit of a lull. I’m not overly familiar with their stuff, but from the reaction of the crowd, they were pretty unfamiliar with it too – judging by the almost sympathetic applause the band got after four or five songs.
However, things picked up. They played some oldies that were very well received. They again did a song with duet vocals from a backing track. This worked slightly better this time, but still I’m not sure this concept really works. P!nk did this last year too, and that was one of her weakest songs.
The band seemed quite taken with the responses they were getting though and appeared amazed at the size of the venue … and how far back the crowd went. They were very humble.
Setlist from the gig is available here.
Liked the gig (though we were a long way back as you can see from the pictures), love the band (the songs that I know). I would go to see them again for sure, but I can’t help feeling that Finland has been diddled in this particular deal given
- price of tickets compared to other countries
- no Tarja
- Delain were supporting them through the rest of Europe
Were you there, what did you think?
