BBC – Questionable Content

I have always been an admirer of the BBC and it's web sites. For me it has always been the first place that I have gone to get reliable and up-to-the-minute news and information about world news, entertainment, technology and sport - especially football. I believe their coverage has been second to none. In the days of social media, and the increase in mashup content and feed readers, information now comes from various sources, almost as soon as it has happened - take Twitter as an example of realtime updating. In perhaps a desperate attempt to gain/maintain readership, it appears, the Beeb now deems fit to promote non-news to the front page of its web site. Stephen Fry quits the web to write his autobiography - Why the hell is that making the front page? Really, for anyone that is remotely interested they probably found out from the horse's mouth himself. Don't get me wrong, I do tweet, obviously, and I do actually follow @stephenfry for whatever reason, but this, IMHO,is not newsworthy. To continue the rant, I was somewhat bemused at the sites coverage of the Xbox Live ban that was invoked on users with modified machines. Like - duh! The only reason that you would hard-mod a box is to play pirated games. Those in the know about these things would have know that there is always some kind of risk involved with this. I don't think homebrew is a legitimate excuse for modding. Follow up to this item were posted on their Newsbeat micro-site though it appears that the really dumb responses have been removed now. The comments were related to some guy modding his Xbox as he didn't want to spend £40 plus on games and how he had saved hundreds on pirate games - then he was upset because he got cut off from Xbox Live. Oh, come on!! So what am I trying to say? Content overload? Desperate attempt for readership of the 'common' man? Cheap news/content? I think that the reliability and integrity of the BBC news site is becoming slightly tarnished. We browse this site for quality news from respected journalists! There are millions of bloggers out there, why would we go the Beeb to read yet another blog? What do you think? What are your news sources?
