KISS

Social networking sites have added a new dimension to community based media. Previously most communities, such as forums or message boards, required some sort of sign-up and the acceptance of some basic rules. With the inception of fan pages on Facebook, for example, these rules fly out the window. Although I have tried to limit these activities on Facebook, I have recently 'become a fan' of a couple of things and soon realized the way things worked was way different than my perceived modus operandus. The 3 major differences that become evident are:
  1. No spoiler alert
  2. There is no apparent indication of user profiles with the exception of the fact that 'fans' at least have one common interest
  3. Threads very soon become off-topic with little or no moderation
