Software Update for Wii

I was ranting a bit the other day about beta software. Another gripe of mine is when you update software and then it doesn’t work or you are given no indication of what the update will really involve. I’ll bet we have all experienced this at one time or another.

A few days ago there was a message from Nintendo saying that the Internet Channel had been upgraded. This is essentially just a web browser, namely Opera, but a new Flash version was included in the installation, so certain websites would be enhanced further. I was a bit concerned as Nintendo were offering this for free, but I had already paid 500 points for it. I read on.

There will be a points redemption available in the near future so I can swap the points spent on this channel for an emulator game(?). To be honest I think I would prefer the credits to spend on songs for Guitar Hero, but at least all is not lost. When I first try to install the update it says that the channel already exists – please delete. This lead to my second concern: will the Wii remember that I have paid for internet channel previously. I proceeded with deletion and then the install and everything appeared to be OK. I checked in my shop history and the record of my channel purchase was still there. Good news.

I think that these concerns should be addressed during the installation. There was no ‘help’ text at any point saying that it was fine to uninstall and the purchase history would still be retained. Common sense perhaps, and for 500 points perhaps not a big issue. There does need to be trust though.

To add insult to injury apparently the iPlayer for Wii does not work after the upgrade. Wherever the fault lies there is no warning message or notices – it just doesn’t work.
